Are you sensitive to foods other than yeast and sugar? Me too! Below are a few ideas for substitutions to other foods that you or someone you know may be sensitive:

Mustard: if you need a new sandwich condiment, think about flavored olive oil, salad dressing, mayonnaise or homemade ketchup.

Onions: onions are great in giving your meal some acidity and sweetness. A good alternative is lime juice since it has similar acid and sweet flavors. Thanks, Living Without magazine (April-May 2009, for that idea. Another substitute is garlic – this is my go-to flavoring. Onion is a common flavoring in stocks, soups and ketchup; consider making your own versions flavored with garlic and other seasonings.

A good reference for substitutions for milk, heavy cream, butter, egg, yogurt, nuts, buttermilk and sour cream can be found at the Simply Sugar and Gluten Free web site.

Are you sensitive to a different food and need some substitution ideas? Or have you discovered your own great version for something? Please share your insights.
